THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE

Role: Ensemble

Production Info: June 24-July 18, 1993 @ Seaside Music Theater
Director: Nona Lloyd
Choreographer: Chuck Hoenes
Musical Director: Robert McDowell

The Boys From Syracuse was the first show I participated in that received scathing reviews. I think it was universally panned by the local press, and the weird thing is that NONE of us saw it coming. The show is a musicalized version of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors (the story of two sets of separated twins), and many a critic pointed out that we would have done much better to stick with the Bard. Our director did so much great work — each one of the ensemble members was given a complete character (I was the town barber) — and the show was chock full of great slapstick and wonderful comedic songs. I guess the reviewers just didn’t get it. The one thing my mother said about the production was that my curly brown wig made me look like my Aunt Jo Ann. I just nodded along with that one.

Boys from Syracuse PhotoOuch!: The town Barber (you-know-who) has a little “run-in” with the Merchant of Ephesus (Chris Weikel) . . . as Antipholus of Syracuse (Galen Fott) looks on.
