Into the Woods had been my favorite show since high school, when my friend Juan Hernandez lent me a videotape of the PBS broadcast and I watched it 5 times in a row. I loved everything about the show . . . the perfect first act, in which all of the different fairy-tale characters unite to make their dreams come true, and the haunting second half, when the audience finds out what consequences can result from desperately seeking “happily ever after.” Playing Jack (of Beanstalk fame) had been a dream of mine since my first encounter with the show, and I was so excited to perform the role in this incredible production. The set was amazing, utilizing all of the university’s technological gizmos, including a winch-tracking system and turntable that allowed each set-piece to glide around the stage by itself. And the costumes were so detailed and well-thought-out . . . I felt like I was in the Broadway show! I remember sitting offstage every night and pinching myself, just to make sure that I was aware of the wonderful-ness all around me!
